The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Geotechnik e.V. (DGGT) was founded in 1950 as the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Erd- und Grundbau e.V. (DGEG). It is dedicated to the science and practice of all issues connected with the use of soil and rock as foundations and building material. The main objective of the DGGT is the promotion of geotechnology in research, teachings, commerce and management.

The association was founded on 20th June 2005 and is entered in the Bonn Register of Associations (Vereinsregister). It has set itself the task of introducing and further developing a pre-qualification system for building companies for the allocation of public building contracts in Germany.
Prequalification is the upstream, contract-independent inspection of the proof of suitability of the requirements defined in § 8 VOB/A. As a result, any company interested in public contracts can prove its suitability to the public contractors at considerably reduced costs in the future.
